This is the False Kiva Ruin. Located in an undisclosed location in a remote section of Canyonlands National Park. You won't find this spot on any map, or in any books. Chances are anyone who's been there won't tell you where it is. The location is kept quiet because of its remote and rugged location. There is no practical way to protect these fragile cultural resources. It's sad to say, but there are always those who don't respect these irreplaceable locations, and have to ruin the fun for everyone else.

This site is called "False Kiva" because many people falsely believe the main round structure to be a ceremonial kiva room. These were actually common shelters for ancestral Puebloan people living in this area around A.D. 1200. A partial excavation in 1986 proved it was only used for daily activities like cooking and sleeping.

This is truly an amazing place to experience. It's the quietest place I've ever been. Standing in this alcove high up in a sheer canyon wall, it's not hard to imagine the people that inhabited this place long ago.

This was a really tricky image to make. I used a circ. polarizer and two stacked grad nd filters to try to even out the exposure.

Yeah, I'll be like everyone else and show you a link to a large format shot I've seen before. My bestfriend's ex used to work for this photograph David Brookover out of Jackson Hole Wy. Anyhoo, he created a large format photo of this using three vert. shots and stitching them together.

How did you find this spot then? I've seen another photo of this same place a while ago and it was panoramic, which was cool, but your is just as awesome. The blue, clouds, and beautiful structure are all just perfect and it is really wonderful to look at ^^

glad you shared the image, but not the location of the place. you were lucky to be able to feel the soul of the space, and most would just wish to get a souvenir and photograph themselves there.

Never been to Canyonlands. Seems like I might need to clear out some time to make a trip there. If I put my mind to it, I think I could find this location. Looks like it is probably worth the effort. Unfortunately you are right about people's respect for the land, or lack thereof. Seems like every time you find someplace magical, you have to keep it a secret to keep some asshole from treating it like a landfill.

Thanks for the description, Nate - very illuminating. I can understand why the location is kept secret. A shame, but it has to be so.

As for the image - I think you've done a great job. I especially like the mouth of the cave arcing overhead, which gives a really good sense of place to the ruin.

This photo is simply stunning. You did an amazing job of capturing the mood of this unique place. The framing of this really works and makes it feel like a secret hidden location. The locations of certain things just need to be kept a secret because once the general public becomes aware all it takes is the blatant disrespect of a few to ruin it for everyone.

I'm originally from Northern California and one of the great treasures of the pacific coast is the Redwood forests which are home to the tallest trees in the world. In the past the record holding tallest trees were revealed to the public and flocks of tourists would come to see the giants which was very damaging to the root systems of these trees. Because of this the locations of the tallest trees (there have been 3 tallest trees since 2000 because of new discoveries) have been kept secret by biologists.
