Dead Horse Point - Southeast Utah

Standing on a mesa top 2,000 feet above the Colorado River gives you a perfect vantage point of one of its countless sculptures it has carved on its way to the sea. This is the view from the tip of Dead Horse Point on probably the windiest morning I've ever experienced. Mustang herds used to run wild all over these mesa tops. This promontory served as a perfect natural corral for cowboys to drive these wild horses. A ways back from the tip of this point is a narrow 30 yard neck of land which was controlled by a fence to keep the mustangs in. They were then roped and broken and either used for personal use, or sold. The unwanted horses were left behind to find their way off the point. As legend has it, a group of these unwanted horses were left on the point with the left open so they could find their way back to the open range. For unknown reasons the mustangs never left the area, eventually succumbing to thirst and, giving this spot the name "Dead Horse Point"

haha this was one of those photos I didnt like when it was taken. Sometimes the real thing is just too good and when you look at the photo while youre still there it just looks like nothing. Turned out decent when i got home and looked at it though.

Wonderful picture of a wonderful place. I've been to Dead Horse many times, but haven't had the chance for evening or morning shots. You've added a great dimension to one of my favorite overlooks.

Oh I love your cliff/canyon photos, they're always so beautiful. It looks like somebody spilled wine all over the rocks and it never washed away... like what ~sebb7 said, I wish you had gotten the whole river bend in there!
Though it must be very hard hiking around trying to get a good shot anyway C;

In a scene like this it's hard to take a bad picture, so it looks good. There is something about the picture itself though, that 'annoys' me. The subject of this picture is the bend in the river, but a part of it is hidden behind the rocks and it's quite far away. It kind of reminds me of people taking pictures of a concert while they have bad seats. I really love the scene though, I was there a couple of years ago, I think even on that part of the river (on a boat). Wasn't the name 'Horse shoe bend', though? Or was that a different place?

That's a different story than what I learned about Dead Horse Point when I was 10, when the family went to Moab for a whitewater rafting trip on the Colorado and Green. The ending is different, at least. In the version I heard, the horses saw and smelled the Colorado from the promontory and, driven by thirst, leapt off the edge and plummeted to their deaths.

Great photo, as always mista Zeman. :heart:

I'd love to go back for another rafting trip and a hike through the canyons, but I live up in Weber County...Moab's like, an 8 hour drive. Ain't happenin' again anytime soon.
